It started with
a pasture.
And a restless
palate.
To Otto Heuscher, an apple was a world of possibilities. Red or green hardly covered it.
Originally from Switzerland, Otto arrived with a taste for the astonishing variety an apple tree could offer. What he found in the United States felt like a much smaller menu. In the 1970s, he bought a cow pasture on Camano Island and began planting his answer.
He called it CAFO: Camano Island Fruit Orchard. On his travels abroad, Otto sought out trees and brought home grafts. A piece of a distant orchard could take root here, in this fertile patch of the Pacific Northwest.
Decade by decade, the pasture became a collection. Branch by branch, his curiosity became a place.
