It started with
a pasture.
And a restless
palate.

To Otto Heuscher, an apple was a world of possibilities. Red or green hardly covered it.

Originally from Switzerland, Otto arrived with a taste for the astonishing variety an apple tree could offer. What he found in the United States felt like a much smaller menu. In the 1970s, he bought a cow pasture on Camano Island and began planting his answer.

He called it CAFO: Camano Island Fruit Orchard. On his travels abroad, Otto sought out trees and brought home grafts. A piece of a distant orchard could take root here, in this fertile patch of the Pacific Northwest.

Decade by decade, the pasture became a collection. Branch by branch, his curiosity became a place.

Beyond red
and green.

Over 250 varieties of apples, pears, figs, plums and kiwis share this ground.

The names alone are enough to stir an appetite: Winter Banana. Northern Spy. Swiss Orange. Each belongs to the living collection Otto began, now one of the Pacific Northwest’s most diverse apple orchards.

Many varieties. One colorful harvest.

There’s a whole world
between the rows.

Old branches stretch into the light. Grass grows beneath the canopy. Follow the rows, and the orchard keeps changing its shape.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Good things
take generations.

An orchard asks you to think beyond a single season. The trees Otto cultivated are now cared for by Adam Brazg, Heather Cleland, Jared Brazg and Lauren Brazg.

Together, they own and maintain the orchard, continuing the work he began: keeping this remarkable diversity alive, one season at a time.

The roots are Otto’s.
The tending continues.
